Hi, My Name is Sub-Opinon Ramirez

Armed with my Japanese dictionary and ‘big-book-o-character-meanings’ I was trying to translate my name from the modern-looking and oft used foreign script (i.e. アーロン) to something a little more traditional looking by way of Chinese-origin characters. Unfortunately, since my name breaks up into some fairly irregular sounds, all I could come up with was 亜論. Unromantically, the translated meaning of these characters is either asian opinion, sub-opinion, or secondary argument. Not exactly the cool name I was hoping for when names have meanings of pure water, honor, or thousand crystals…

My friend Hitoshi did a little research and came up with 亜龍.

Although archaic, it can still be pronounced as “Aaron” and carries the meaning of “Asian dragon.” Cool, huh? Sure, I may be lacking in Asian features or heritage, but I’m sure my dragon-like personality qualities more than make up for it, right?

OK, maybe not. Perhaps my parents should have named me Chunanbeiron so I could have used 中南米龍 (Latin-American dragon) for my name, instead. Oh well.
