This weekend one of my jr. high's had a chorus competition as part of their culture festival. Each class sang two songs and were evaluated and judged. While the first-year students songs could be described as “warbley,” the third-year students were pretty impressive; filled with six-part harmonies and tricky tempo changes. It’s amazing what three years of mandatory singing can do, and explains the love for karaoke, and why every Japanese person can carry a tune.

After the performances, but before the winners were announced, there was a special guest who played at the concert. Although the piece he played was described as 'too John Tesh-y and too balding' it was generally accepted that he did an OK job.
